Also known as lip pencils.

Because the skin texture around the edge of the mouth can be somewhat uneven, lipstick can sometimes be difficult to apply evenly. Lip liners fill uneven areas on the outer edges of the lips after applying lipstick.

Lip liners can be used with lipstick or lip gloss, to create a fuller appearance or more definition around the edge of the mouth or even an altered lip shape.

Apply to outer edges of lip line and blend outwards to add definition and enhance fullness.

Some are a retractable tube or pencil form. Others are liquid or pen-like. Lip liners areusually available in the same range of colors as lipsticks.

It is also possible to have permanent lip liner through the use of tattoos and permanent make-up application. The clients mouth is numbed with a topical anesthetic and the liner template is traced over with a tattooing tool. The tool injects pigmentation beneath the skin, leaving a permanent line around the lips.

Immediately following the procedure, the clients lips may swell and the newly pigmented area may appear darker than desired. Over the following days, however, this swelling will disappear and the lined area will fade in color. In many cases, clients may find that the resultant color is lighter than what they had envisioned. This is often because the aesthetician or dermatologist h as applied the permanent lip liner conservatively, as it is easier to later darken it if needed than to lighten it. Thus, it may be necessary to return for a touch-up application a few weeks later.

It is expensive, especially when multiple application sessions are required. It fades over time, making touch-up procedures necessary every few years.

Semi-permanent lip liners stay on the lips for as about 2 weeks. Applying is not uncomfortable or painful as the process only involves applying the liquid color and allowing it to dry. The dyes used for semi-permanent lip liners are made from herbs and they are mainly henna based. Henna has no negative reactions.
